For students
The University of the Algarve has two campuses in Faro: Gambelas, to the west, and Penha, near the centre. Choose your area based on where most of your classes are: there are buses between them, but the trip takes time.
In the Algarve it is common for contracts to follow the academic year (September to June), because many landlords prefer to rent to tourists in summer. Check this before signing if you need to stay in July and August.
Getting around
Urban buses link the centre to both campuses, the airport and Faro beach. The train station has the Algarve line (from Lagos to Vila Real de Santo António) and direct services to Lisbon.
Tips for renting a room
- Visit the room (or do a video call) before paying anything. Be wary of anyone asking for a deposit before showing the home, or of prices far below the area's.
- Ask for a written contract and rent receipts. Landlords must issue electronic receipts on the Tax Authority portal (Portal das Finanças), and they let you deduct part of the rent from your income tax (IRS).
- Check what is included: bills (water, electricity, gas, internet), cleaning of shared areas and house rules, such as guests and pets.
- The deposit is usually one or two months' rent. Agree in writing on when it is returned and take photos of the room when you move in.
